Service user involvement - training and development of organisational structures

  • East London and the City Mental Health Trust

    Developed a user group that is now integrated into all strategy, planning and delivery of mental health services in the area

    Designed and implemented a project to “Improve the Patient Experience of the Care Programme Approach”.

    Service User Research Group for England, which involves service users in the UK Mental Health Research Network.

    Reviewed the current state of user involvement in the organisation and recommended changes that have increased the integration of users in all aspects of the operation

    Senior Researcher User Focussed Research

  • The Mental Health Foundation and the National Institute for Mental Health Excellence.

    Researched the current “State of the Service User Movement” and “Network models” to inform the development of national investment into service user involvement.

  • The Welsh Assembly Government

    Reviewed the effectiveness and capacity building capabilities of the national mental health service user group and presented solutions for identified areas of concern.

  • Haringey Council and Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust

    Reviewed the current effectiveness of their systems for user involvement in their personal care and in planning services. Designed a strategic, sustainable structure for the future which was adopted by the Primary Care Trust.


Charity governance

  • Health and Social Care Advisory Service; National Mind; local Minds; Wales User Network; 4Sight African and Caribbean Mental Health User’s Group

    Provided in-depth training on the roles and responsibilities of trustees and the differences between executive and non-executive functions.


Organisational review, strategic planning and business planning 

  • Core Arts – a community arts project in Hackney for a socially excluded group of people with severe mental health problems

    Led the organisational, strategic and business planning for a £4 million expansion. Also provided ongoing performance management, governance and mental health awareness training and ran sessions on fund-raising techniques for the organisation.         

  • East London and the City Mental Health Trust

    Engaged African and Caribbean men with severe mental health problems in the development of a detailed business plan to create an alternative and sustainable organisation within the ‘Delivering Race Equality’ programme.

    Led team building and strategic planning sessions.


Senior manager and chief executive supervision and coaching

  • Supervision and coaching chief executives of National Mind, the Advocate for Mental Health, and executives at Hammersmith and Fulham Mind.

  • Coaching and development with recently appointed senior managers in Age Concern Newham and the Heart of Bow.


Policy development

  • The Mental Health Foundation and the National Institute for Mental Health Excellence

    Lead researcher on the user-led Strategies for Living Project at the Mental Health Foundation,

    Scoping work on the current “State of the Service User Movement” and “Network models” to inform NIMHE’s future involvement in the development of national structures.

  • North-East London Mental Health Trust

    Provided service user input into the Change Network (a strategic group with the brief of “Modernising Mental Health Services in East London: A New Model for Health and Social Care”).

    Developed values-based practices for and trained the organisation workforce in their practical application.

  • Healthcare Commission and the Health and Social Care Advisory Service.

    Reviewed mental health services.

  • The Modernisation Agency

    Headed the team developing models of recovery plans for zero-rated Trusts.

  • East London and the City Mental Health Trust

    Led the multi-disciplinary team setting up the Assertive Outreach Service in Hackney, guiding the strategic development and overseeing research on the effectiveness of the service.

  • Health and Social Care Advisory Service

    Advised a team developing guidelines for Primary Care Trusts on commissioning mental health services.

  • John Howard Centre Forensic Unit

    Led a multi-disciplinary team of staff and service users in the creation of  formal policies and operational guidelines for the provision of services to female patients and for sexual relationships on wards.

  • Department of Health

    With a multi-disciplinary team, reviewed services for women in Rampton Special Hospital and made recommendations for improvements in current practices.


Training in mental health awareness and stress in the workplace in voluntary and statutory sector organisations

  • East London and the City NHS Mental Health Trust.

    Trained a service user reference group in confidence building and meetings skills; taught them how to effectively influence strategy, planning, and service delivery.

    Trained all nurses on the Hackney site in the implementation of the Care Programme Approach, focussing on how to involve the service users.

    Trained staff, trustees, tutors and members in mental health awareness and implemented flexible working throughout the organisation.           

  • Welsh Assembly Government

    Trained the National Service User Group members and trustees in governance, mental health awareness, and how to implement an equal opportunities policy.


Inquiries and legal bodies  

  •  Mental Health Tribunal Member appointed by the Department of Constitutional Affairs.

  • Chair of Independent Panels of Inquiry into serious untoward incidents in South West London Strategic Health Authority and East London and the City Mental Health Trust.
